Guinness Extra Stout: A Classic From 1759
Guinness Extra Stout is the a classic Irish dry stout that can trace it’s history back to 1759 at the Guinness Brewery in Dublin in Ireland. The Extra Stout is decidedly different from the Guinness Drought that is served in most restaurants. The large bottle fits a pint glass with a smooth pour resulting in a small dark beige foamy head. The smell is kind of reminiscent of a lager rather than a stout. The color of this stout is kind of surprising too; it’s not as dark as I expected more of a very dark opaque brown with some lightness around the edges. It almost has a red or maroon tint to it.

The smell has a faint but distinctive roasted malt aroma with a bitter sweet coffee overtone. The taste is like the smell, a bit bitter not unpleasantly bitter, it’s quite smooth and pleasant. Unlike like most other stouts, this Guinness exhibits a more of a refined sharpness with a very distinctive taste and character. The Guinness Extra Stout would make a great introduction to stouts for any new beer aficionados.
