Legend has it that the glass bottom on the tankard was created due to the first punch in a bar fight being thrown while the victim was taking a drink. The glass bottom enabled men to see while drinking.
Another legend says that the glass bottom was created so men could see a conscription coin in the bottom of the glass and refuse the drink, thus avoiding conscription in the army. The conscription coin, or King's shilling, was a trick often used back in the 18th century by recruiters. Once a man took possession of the coin, whether he meant to or not, he had to pay the debt back by military service.
