For a door knocker with warmth and personality, adorn your front door with our beautiful Claddagh Door Knocker from Mullingar Pewter. This lovely piece is handcrafted in Ireland by Mullingnar Pewter’s team of highly skilled craftspeople, more than a dozen of which each take a turn in adding their own personal artistic touch to it.

Set on a distinguished black, oval-shaped wood base, our Claddagh Door Knocker is made of lead-free, tarnish-resistant pewter in a radiant matte finish. Engraved on the pewter piece at the center and on the knocker handle is the iconic Irish Claddagh, a crowned heart held between two hands. These combined elements have stood as symbols of love, friendship, and loyalty for many generations. Our Claddagh Door Knocker is approximately 8 inches long and 3.5 inches wide, and includes a 9 inch wooden base that can be mounted directly onto any door.

Historically speaking, the Claddagh is perhaps just as significant a symbol of love as the turquoise, and it also has an ancient history spanning thousands of years. First appearing in ancient Rome, an early version of the Claddagh symbolized the forming of an unbreakable pact or promise. Throughout the middle ages and Renaissance-era Europe, two hands holding a heart became a popular expression of love and were often used for engagement and wedding rings. The current iteration of the Claddagh that we recognize today is believed to have made its debut in the fishing village of Claddagh, in County Galway sometime in the 1600s. In addition to being used in wedding engagements, Claddagh rings were popular gifts between close friends or mothers and daughters who were coming of age. As the Claddagh’s popularity spread, the same treasured symbolism began to make its way into other types of products such as bracelets, necklaces, pendants, rings, and more. We are so thrilled to offer another amazing piece from Mullingar Pewter that continues this proud tradition. Those who enter your home will be immediately greeted with one of Ireland’s most cherished and well-recognized symbols of friendship before they even step through the door.

Since 1974, Mullingar Pewter has stood as one of Ireland’s greatest producers of pewter giftware and specialty items. Although the Irish have been crafting pewter utensils for nearly a thousand years, the method was lost for many centuries until its revival in the 12th century. At this time however, pewter items were only available to the wealthy upper classes, who used it to decorate the dining tables of their castle halls. Mullingar has played a major role in revitalizing the popular use of fine pewter items as they were originally made all those hundreds of years ago. The craftsmanship possessed by Mullingars craftsmen takes years to master, and strictly follows old casting methods and meticulous assembly and hand finishing. Our Claddagh Door Knocker is no exception to the unparalleled quality that every item in Mullingar’s workshop is built upon, and we cannot wait to see one mounted on your door. Our door knocker will look new for many, many decades and will be enjoyed by generations of families and friends who choose to visit your home. Do not delay in ordering yours today!
