The Celtic Cross has served as a popular symbol of love and unity in Ireland for many generations, as is apparent by its use in religious architecture, cemeteries, and illuminated manuscripts. Each end of this green and blue cross also includes a small, subtle Celtic knot design further linking its significance to Irish history and culture. The shamrock is of course another iconic symbol of Irish culture and history, and its origins are believed to date back to the fifth century AD, when St. Patrick first arrived in Ireland and began to establish the church there. In many medieval designs, he is seen holding a three-leaf shamrock as a symbol of the holy trinity of the father, son, and holy spirit. The Claddagh is thought to have origins stretching much farther than the shamrock, claiming roots in ancient Rome. The Irish have used the Claddagh design for centuries in jewelry as a way to symbolize vows of love, friendship, and loyalty.

And last but certainly not least we have the Celtic harp, Ireland’s official national symbol and perhaps its greatest contribution to the world of music. Since medieval times, harpists have played an important role in matters of state, their rare musical skills earning them places of great importance in the home of Irish and British nobility. Often serving as counselors in time of war or political strife, harpists often lived in the castles alongside the country’s rulers. In 1534, King Henry VIII began minting coins with the Irish harp appearing on one side, and in 1642, Eoghan Rua N Neill raised the first green flag with the yellow harp that would become the official flag of Ireland. Today, the flag remains the official emblem of Ireland, although it is often overshadowed by the popular Irish tricolor flag.

The second towel, outlined in rich colors of gold, green, and a soft cream color, is also emblazoned in intricate Celtic knot designs and features one of the most treasured Irish blessings: May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the Sun shine warm upon your fields, And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.
