A gorgeous piece of Irish jewelry from Solvar, this Sterling Silver Celtic Cross Pendant is rich with significance and beauty. Made from hallmarked sterling silver and inset with four genuine Connemara marble stones, this pendant necklace is the perfect gift for a first communion or graduation, and would make a wonderful addition to any jewelry collection.
The Celtic cross is almost as old as Christianity in Ireland itself, with the first versions appearing towards the end of St. Patrick’s live in the 5th century. They are characterized by the circle that enwraps the center of the cross and by their slightly tapered arms. The circle is thought to be an adaptation of an ancient Irish symbol added to the Christian cross to bridge the learning gap between pre-Christian beliefs and Catholicism. By the 12th century, monumental stone High Crosses had been erected throughout Ireland with rich detail and standing upwards of two meters in height.
Connemara marble, world-renowned for its beautiful green hues, is unique to Ireland and dates back nearly 900 million years. This marble comes from the Joyce family mine in the west of the country, one of the oldest mines still in operation in the country, founded in the 19th century.
