Why do we wear rings?

For millennia, rings have been used to adorn the body, as a show of wealth, a demonstration of taste or allegiance, or for their supposed healing and protective powers. Often crafted from precious metals and inset with gemstones or beautiful minerals, rings have long been a jewelry staple for their ease of wear and their high visibility on the hands without getting in the way of daily tasks. Our rings all feature Celtic designs that call back to a uniquely Irish form of artwork and imagery that developed in the middle ages and was inspired by even earlier artwork from continental Europe that crossed the sea and landed in Ireland around 300 BC.

Celtic Knot Rings

One of the most common motifs found in this era of Irish art and Celtic jewelry is the Celtic knot. The Celtic knot comes in many forms and this motif is one of the most recognizable images associated with Irish design. Most broadly, the Celtic knot consists of a single interwoven design that creates an endless loop. It is, at its core, an impossible knot that could never exist in the material world, but can only be represented on paper, in carving, or as a flat design in jewelry, making it a fascinating and mysterious image. Most scholars have come to view the Celtic knot as signifying the ancient Irish pagans’ notion of the interconnectivity of all things in the universe, from the trees and plants to humans, buildings, the heavens, and the earth. Nothing can exist in isolation, the knot suggests because each part is bound to another part by the continuous spiral of its weave. Furthermore, the endless nature of the knot with no beginning and no end is thought to symbolize the cyclicality of life, from birth to life, to death and rebirth. It has a similarity to the Christian notion of Ashes to Ashes and Dust to Dust, whereby each living thing is replenished and influenced by what has come before and will help future generations even in death. These significances make the Celtic knot one of the most enduring Irish symbols, and it’s no wonder they are incorporated in so many Celtic rings.

Irish Claddagh Rings

Another popular Irish design is the Claddagh, with two hands holding a heart topped with a crown. Legend has it that an Irish sailor was kidnapped in the 17th century and enslaved in North Africa by a goldsmith. Over his enslavement, he collected enough gold scrapings to make the first-ever Claddagh ring for his beloved, whom he was forced to leave behind in Ireland, specifically in the town of Claddagh, near Galway, hence the name. When his owner eventually released him, he took the ring back to Ireland and gave it to his love as a symbol of his enduring affection. Each component represents a specific emotion or promise, with the hands representing friendship, the heart love, and the crown loyalty. This is why a Claddagh ring can be gifted for those who you consider your friends, loyal people, and loved ones.
