This elegant and modern Sterling Silver Celtic Cross Necklace from Solvar Jewelers is a beautiful symbol of faith and Irish heritage wherever you wear it. The cross itself is made from oxidized sterling silver, leaving the interior a darker, rougher shade than the design elements that stand out in perfect polish. The 20in. chain is made from a highly durable stainless steel.
The Celtic cross design itself is hugely significant to Irish art and design, dating back to the earliest efforts to convert the country to Catholicism in the 5th century. The trademark circle surrounding the cross was commonly found in Celtic artwork and incorporated into the Catholic cross as a way of bridging the gap between pre-Christian beliefs and the new Catholicism preached by St. Patrick. By the 9th century, Celtic High Crosses started appearing dotted throughout the country with rich decorations of Celtic knots. Some of the tallest were upwards of two meters and still stand to this day.
The interior of the cross itself is detailed with beautifully raised Trinity knots, symbolizing the Christian trinity and themselves a feature of Irish design and artwork for hundreds of years.
