Belleek’s elegant classic Claddagh bowls are a perfect gift for an engagement, wedding, or anniversary. Though the Claddagh design is most commonly seen on rings, it is a lovely emblem of love and devotion to display anywhere on your person or in your home.
Though the set of two bowls is both beautiful and understated, it needn’t be relegated to the china cabinet, nor brought out only on special occasions. The 20-ounce bowls can be put in both the microwave and the dishwasher, making them perfect to use every day. They are a lovely way to celebrate one’s love and Irish heritage while enjoying a home-cooked meal.
Many legends are associated with the now-famous Claddagh ring. The design has three core elements: hands, a crown, and a heart. It has its origins in the 17th century, and most believe that the motif symbolizes friendship, loyalty, and love. Many use the Claddagh ring as an engagement ring, and many fine versions are inlaid with fine gems, including diamonds and birthstones.
Below the Claddagh design, the bowls feature an intricate embossed Celtic knot. Celtic knots have been a mainstay of Irish art since pre-Christian times, and many highly-detailed versions of the pattern appear in early church texts and manuscripts. The design regained popularity during the Celtic Revival in the 1800s when it became a widely-used motif in arts and crafts. It has stayed in vogue since then, and today is often seen in Irish jewelry design, and many who want to wear their Irish pride in a more permanent fashion will get Celtic knot tattoos.
The bowls carry Irish heritage not only in the designs they bear but through the legacy of their maker, Belleek Pottery. Founded in 1857, Belleek has a tradition of over 160 years of fine pottery crafting. After the ravages of the Famine, the company’s founder, John Caldwell Bloomfield, wanted to establish a business that would bring employment and prosperity to the town surrounding his estate in County Fermanagh. He didn’t have to look too far—the soil on his property in the town of Belleek (from the Irish for “flagstone ford”) was ideal for making clay. The rest, as they say, is history.
The 19th century brought major developments in pottery-making, including the invention of parian china, a type of porcelain that looks like marble from the Greek isle of Paros, and is workable in liquid form. It can be manipulated to take on the glossiness and detail of marble carvings, which made it an immensely popular medium for china figurines and objets d’art. Once Belleek began incorporating parian into their line of offerings, it quickly became their signature. Even Queen Victoria was a fast fan; she reportedly made large orders of Belleek parianware, and today, one can view many 19th century Belleek items in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Belleek maintains high standards of excellence in all aspects of their creation and design process to guarantee each piece they trademark and send to Shamrock Gift is without flaw.
To create a matching set, we recommend pairing our Claddagh bowls with Belleek’s Claddagh mugs, pitcher, creamer, and other tableware (sold separately). The cream designs are sophisticated and detailed, perfect for use in any season and for any holiday. Together, the pieces make an elegant tableware set, suitable for handing down from generation to generation.
