12 Days of Christmas: Our Favorite Guinness Christmas Ads

Posted by Andy Peters on 13th Dec 2020

It’s that time of year again—time for a new Guinness Christmas ad! It’s a tradition that dates back to 2004, with Guinness releasing a nearly 2-minute ad to mark the holiday season. In anticipation of this year’s, we look back at some of the best.

2014

In one spot, there’s a flyover shot of snow falling on the sea and along the coast. It soars to a small rock house on a cliff overlooking the ocean and the chimney spewing smoke. On the table inside the warm and cozy cottage, with the fireplace roaring, are four bottles of Guinness, a loaf of bread and holiday cakes. It’s one of the most cheerful Christmas ads you’ve ever seen—with or without a Guinness!

2006

How about the one with the famous Irish explorer Tom Crean, trudging across Antarctica in 1912, deep inside an ice-covered cave, dreaming of a future Irish pub in 1927 and a bartender serving Guinness.

2011

If you like your ads short and to point, it’s hard to forget the one with the close-up shots of cream and bubbles and the tagline, “Dreaming of a White & Black Christmas.”

2014 (AGAIN)

Then there’s the ultimate Guinness Christmas ad, which first aired in 2014 and has since become the one that everyone makes sure they watch again each holiday season.

This one is set in a picture-perfect snowy Dublin, as the snowflakes fall from the sky on a winter night. A man in a topcoat and hat passes the Irish Parliament building checks his watch just as it turns Midnight on Dec. 25. He and his dog stroll by two adults having a snowball fight and, later, a boat christened “Claddagh” and snow falling on a Molly Malone statue. The ad closes with the snowfall in front of Guinness’ front door, the famous St. James Gate in Dublin.

And the line that ends it: “Even at the home of the black stuff, they dream of a white one.”

2005

Finally, though not a Christmas ad, we’d be remiss if we didn’t give this last ad an honorable mention. The ad, called “Quarrel,” debuted in 2005, winning the gold medal at the FAB awards and stars a young Michael Fassbender, before his international fame, making the trek across the Atlantic to settle a score. Watch and see where this native Irish son got his start.
