History of Guinness
Guinness has a history that is just as monumental as its international brand presence. It started on December 31st, 1759, when the founder, Arthur Guinness, signed an incredible 9,000-year lease at St. James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin, Ireland, which is where Guinness is still made to this day. Marked by its majestic black entrance gate that bears the Guinness name and harp logo in contrasting gold lettering, the antique-style light posts that flank the gate, and the weathered brick road leading to the gate, St. James’s Gate Brewery is a world-famous Irish landmark that many visits today. What made the Guinness brand even more popular were the colorful and amusing illustrations in advertisements that first appeared in 1935 to revamp the beer brand’s image. Exuding originality and a charming vintage flair that will never go out of style, these ads were created by the advertising firm of S.H. Benson and are featured on a wide array of Guinness merchandise from coasters and playing cards to wall signs. Some of the especially memorable ads include those featuring the iconic Guinness Toucan perched on a weathervane as he balances a pint on his beak, a turtle carrying a pint on the top of his shell, and a zookeeper with a Guinness bottle and pint in his hands running away from a massive, thirsty lion.
