Most of us are familiar with the frequently-used term, “the luck of the Irish.” In fact, it’s no stretch to say that it’s helped maintain the already-high popularity of the Irish people abroad over the years! Those who hail from (and trace their heritage to) the Emerald Isle are indeed a blessed people, internationally known and loved for their fun-loving nature, ironclad work ethic, abundance of creativity, and colorful sense of national pride.

Still, even with all of this in mind, the question remains: just where did the “luck of the Irish” saying come from, and when? Interestingly, the answer lies not to the eastern edge of the Atlantic Ocean, but to the west. That’s right: “the luck of the Irish” is a phrase that was born in America! During the second half of the 19th century, the gold and silver rushes of the United States saw many workers earn their unexpected fortunes. Many of these men were, in fact, of Irish and Irish American stock -- and so, as a result, the term “luck of the Irish” was coined in response to their great success in the trade. These folks had, quite literally, come across the ocean and stuck gold. Of course, we all know that these “lucky” few were also, for the most part, the minority. Life was no picnic for the first Irish to arrive in the United States; many natives disliked these newcomers for their pluck and willingness to take risks, and as a result often dismissed their achievements through hard work and perseverance as the products of good luck. However, who’s to say that it wasn’t a healthy mix of all three?

"A Little Irish Luck” Collection

In honor of the hardworking spirit of the Irish (and their admittedly fantastic good fortune, too!) we at are delighted to present to you our exclusive range, “A Little Irish Luck.” Appropriately, this line is absolutely stuffed with goodies pertaining to old Irish blessings.

Irish Blessing Gifts

In use for hundreds, if not thousands of years, these verbal bestowments of goodwill are most often exchanged in regard to health, happiness, and closeness to God. Some are so beautiful that they could even be mistaken for contemporary poetry! Take, for example, one of our personal favorites: “May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, and the rainfall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of your hand.” Printed on everything from tea towels to festive Christmas tree baubles, such Irish blessings are a charming way to add a touch of the Emerald Isle into your home:
Little Irish Luck Keyring Mum Saying- this old Irish blessing keyring in a polished silver-toned rectangular metal design can be cherished for years. At the top of the keyring charm is a circular Claddagh emblem.
A Little Irish Luck Hot Plate Stand- functional and nostalgic, this hot plate stand makes a great cooking and dining accessory.
